Scholarships

Scholarships are a helpful way to defray the costs of tuition, books, food, housing and other expenses directly tied to attending the university. Over $50 million in scholarships and grants is distributed annually.

Merit-based awards are awarded to students based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, field of study and more. Need-based awards are funded by the generosity of W&M alumni and friends who set the criteria for recipient selection and how the money will be applied. Students interested in pursuing need-based scholarships must apply for financial aid to demonstrate financial need.

In addition to awards provided by the financial aid office, there are additional scholarship opportunities from numerous department scholarships, and students can also pursue outside scholarships and other external resources. Please note that financial assistance from outside sources may affect your eligibility for financial aid since those resources reduce your financial need.

How Do I Apply for Scholarships at W&M?

All incoming students are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships without having to submit a separate scholarship application. The financial aid office determines need-based scholarship assistance based on demonstrated need through the financial aid application process.

Searching for External Scholarships?

Many students receive outside scholarships and other financial resources in addition to the financial aid provided by W&M. This includes scholarships from a high school, private club, agency, corporation, organization, departmental scholarships and/or tuition benefits from a parent’s employer.

Did You Receive a Scholarship?

Please let us know. Proactive notification helps us make any applicable changes to your financial aid eligibility as early as possible. Otherwise, any necessary adjustments and a notification of changes will be made once the scholarships or resources are sent to W&M. You can also report scholarships on the CSS Profile or using our outside scholarship and resource reporting form (PDF).
