Greetings from HERO:  Home Education Recognition Organization, Inc.

“Starting Strong, Finishing Strong”

HERO is a non-sectarian, 501c3, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to helping homeschool graduates continue their education.  HERO funds have helped students continue their education in vocational schools, college and universities, and medical school.

Home education has become an accepted means of training children.  This acceptance was not granted over night, but was earned over time as parents, teachers, and the public saw what committed parents could accomplish at home.  Home education will continue to advance as students educated at home take their place as employees, entrepreneurs, citizens, and leaders.  HERO is fostering the long-term continued success of the home education movement by extending a helping hand to some of our most promising students.

Founded in 2001 under the leadership of then-retiring FPEA Chairman Marcy Krumbine, HERO has awarded approximately $50,000 in scholarships to assist homeschooled students continue their education after high school.  Many of the “elder statesmen” of home education have served on the HERO Board of Directors, which manages an endowment and reviews scholarship applications.

It has been our privilege to be a part of completing the dream for past award recipients, and are eager to receive applications from highly-qualified home educated students who meet the eligibility requirements for one or more of our scholarships.  All awards are merit-based; names of winning recipients are announced in the Spring.

HERO scholarships are funded through fundraisers, donations, and proceeds from the HERO endowment.  We welcome your tax-deductable donations, which may be sent here.

We offer four college scholarships:

CRAIG DICKINSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP for academically excellent students.

MASON LIGHTHOUSE SCHOLARSHIP for service-minded students.

STATE OF THE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP for the student who plans to study performing or visual arts past high school.

SANDRA HANCOCK SCHOLARSHIP is given to the applicant whose bio in the H.E.R.O. scholarship application best exemplifies the benefits of home education.
