The Community Scholarship Fund offers one-year scholarships. The intent of this fund is to provide additional financial support to students who have already received scholarships from the Foundation. The Community Scholarship Fund also supports high school seniors of merit and financial need who may not be eligible for one of named scholarships established by local families or businesses.

Donors can give any amount to support the Community Scholarship Fund.

Braylon Meade Memorial Scholarship (3 at $2,500; valued at up to $10,000) awards three different scholarships to students who meet the following criteria: 1) for a Washington-Liberty high school senior who was on the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team for at least one year, has financial need (FN), and a GPA of 2.0 or higher 2) for a Washington-Liberty high school senior who has participated on any W-L sports team, has financial need (FN), and a GPA of 2.0 or higher 3) for an Arlington Public School student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. R

Marjorie D. Buynak Scholarship (4 at up to $5,000; valued at up to $20,000) for high school seniors who are Arlington residents with at least a 3.0 GPA to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. FN/R

Charles M. and Elizabeth S. Munnecke Scholarship (4 at up to $5,000; valued up to $20,000) for high school seniors who are Arlington residents, who have attended an Arlington Public High School during their junior and senior years, to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. FN/R

Arlington’s Future Scholarship (2 at $2,000; valued at up to $8,000) for APS high school seniors who currently reside in committed affordable housing, as defined by the Arlington County Housing Division, to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. Preference will be given to students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. FN/R

Arlington Women’s Civic Alliance Scholarship (2 at $2,000; valued at up to $8,000) for a woman who is a resident of Arlington or who is a graduate of APS, to attend NOVA. Can be renewed up to three times at either NOVA or a 4-year school. Requires a minimum GPA of 3.0. R

Frank K. Wilson Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an APS high school senior who has had an Individualized Education Plan and plans to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. FN

Warren G. Stambaugh Memorial Foundation Scholarship (1 at $2,000; valued at up to $8,000) for an APS high school senior who has had an Individualized Education Plan and plans to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. R

Tony Young Memorial Scholarship (1 at $2,500; valued at up to $10,000) for an APS high school graduate, or an Arlington resident with high school equivalent degree (ex: GED). To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must have a physical, cognitive or sensory disability. FN/R

Gail Nuckols Memorial Scholarship (1 at $1,000) for an Arlington public high school senior who has a B average and plans to attend a 4 year college or university. FN

Kar F. Gong Memorial Scholarship (1 at $2,500; valued at up to $10,000) for an Arlington senior who currently resides in committed affordable housing, as defined by the Arlington County Housing division. FN/R

Jackisch Scholarship (1 at $1,500; valued at up to $6,000) for an APS senior with a 3.0 GPA or higher. FN/R

Van Riswick Family Scholarship (1 at $1,500) for an Arlington resident who is an APS high school graduate (attended an APS high school during their junior and senior years), or for an Arlington resident with high school equivalent degree (ex: GED), to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. FN

University of Management and Technology Scholarship (3 at $2,000; valued at up to $6,000) for Arlington students with at least a 3.0 GPA. Awards can be made to applicants who are returning to school or enrolling for the first time as an adult. Renewable for only two additional years. Students can reapply for extensions beyond the 3-year term of the award. R

Wilkerson Family Scholarship (3 at $2,000; valued at $8,000) is for a deserving Arlington high school student. FN/R

Bharati and Lincoln Jain Scholarship is for a renewing student entering their 4th year who needs the funds to persist and finish their degree. Preference for a student studying medicine, business, or engineering. FN

Shay Family Scholarship (up to $4,000) for a new or renewing student to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. FN

Rixse Family Scholarship (1 at $1,500; valued at up to $6,000) for a highly motivated APS high school senior with strong academic credentials. FN/R

Vallanee Hayes Scholarship (1 at $2,500; valued at up to $10,000) for a woman of color with strong academic credentials. FN/R

Cooper Memorial Scholarship (1 at $1,500) for a graduate of an Arlington high school (public or private) or Arlington Resident with a high school equivalent degree (e.g., GED), with a minimum 3.0 GPA, who played on the varsity or junior varsity baseball or softball team at one of Arlington’s high schools. FN

Tiffany May Joslyn Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance Scholarship (1 at $2,500) for APS high school seniors who are members of their school’s Gay Straight Alliance or whose accomplishments demonstrate significant support for the APS policies of diversity, fairness, and safety, as demonstrated in an essay.

Arthur W. Gosling Scholarship (1 at $2,500) for an APS high school senior who has a strong record of community service and who plans to attend either George Mason or Marymount University. FN

Rich Doud Arlington Chamber of Commerce Scholarship (2 at $2,000) for high school seniors, who are Arlington residents, who have at least a 2.8 GPA, and who demonstrate student and community leadership, to attend an accredited postsecondary institution. FN

Terry Holzheimer Memorial Scholarship (1 at $1,000; valued at up to $4,000) for an APS senior with a 3.0 GPA or higher and a strong record of community leadership. FN/R

Godfrey & Glynis Simpson Scholarship (1 at $2,000; valued at $8,000) For a first-generation college student with a minimum 2.8 GPA, with a preference for those of Caribbean, Afro Caribbean, or Latin decent, and those interested in studying commercial real estate, engineering, or education. Students should demonstrate a sense of service to family and community through acts of sharing knowledge, time, and limited resources without an expectation of reward. FN/R

John Carroll Whitener Scholarship (1 at $2,000; valued at up to $8,000) for an APS high school senior who is a member of their school’s Gay Straight Alliance and have documented achievements in leadership. FN/R

For new applicants, the online application usually takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete and requires a brief personal statement. The application also requires one letter of recommendation and your high school transcript. The Student Aid Report from the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) or other proof of financial need may be required for financial need-based scholarships.

No. Arlington Community Foundation is no longer requesting SAT or ACT scores.

A Student Aid Report (SAR) from the FAFSA OR the VASA Application Report from the Virginia Alternative State Aid Application (VASA) is encouraged but NOT required. If you are not eligible to submit the FAFSA or VASA, we will ask you to submit other financial documentation.

For questions regarding the FAFSA, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or 1-319-337-5665. If your family’s taxes are not final when you submit your FAFSA, you will receive a preliminary “Expected Family Contribution” amount that can be submitted to the Foundation.

If you are not eligible to submit the FAFSA, please check to see if you are eligible to submit the Virginia Alternative State Aid Application (VASA). If you are not eligible to submit the FAFSA or the VASA, you may still apply and we will ask you to provide other information regarding your financial status. You will also be considered for our non-financial need-based scholarships. In addition, there may be other scholarship programs to which you can apply; contact your school’s counselor for more information. Websites like FastWeb and FinAid are good search engines for scholarships of all types.

We anticipate notifying selected applicants of their scholarship match and amounts by the end of April to allow time for this offer to be incorporated into college acceptance plans. There will be an evening reception for all recipients at the beginning of June. Checks are mailed directly to universities and colleges in July.

Award displacement occurs when one form of financial aid, such as an outside scholarship, results in the reduction in other forms of financial aid. Click here for more information and suggestions for how to mitigate displacement.

If you’re facing, or think you may be facing, displacement, this fact sheet from the National Scholarship Providers Association covers many of the potential questions. These are the three to start with:

1. Does my college practice either partial or full displacement?
   If the answer from the financial aid office is “no,” you’re in the clear.
   
   
2.  If displacement is practiced, will the college reduce loans first?
   This is the best-case scenario if a school answers “yes” to the first question. If they’re going to reduce any part of the financial aid package, you want it to be the amount of loan aid, not grant aid. (That way, even though you’re losing out on some funds, they’re funds you’d have to pay back after graduation.)
   
   
3. Do I have to use my private scholarship for this year’s tuition?
   Financial aid packages differ wildly, and so do private scholarship guidelines and restrictions. If you find yourself facing the possibility of displacement, contact both your school and your scholarship provider to explore your options. It may be possible to defer the funds to a subsequent year when your need may change; it may also be possible to use the funds for books, room and board or other fees not reflected in your aid package.

On April 13, 2017, Samuel Kwarteng lost his life due to senseless gun violence. Acquiring Knowledge for Transcendence was started as a non-profit not only to honor his memory but to inspire others to reach their full potential. Sam saw how education and perseverance were tools needed to rise above what statistics project. He wasn’t one to think small or one to settle and there wasn’t a challenge you could put in front of him that he wouldn’t take. We hope that we can instill the same fire that Sam had in our upcoming youth with our organization. We want our youth to believe that there is no limit to what they can do as long as they put their heart and mind into it. This award is for high school seniors attending Fairfax, Prince Williams, Alexandria, Arlington, Prince George, Montgomery County and D.C. The Mount Olivet Foundation is offering an Equity Scholarship toward the cost of post-secondary school education, for a Black or Latinx high school senior entering college in Fall of 2024 from the following high schools: (I) All High Schools in Arlington County, Virginia; (ii) Alexandria City High School (Alexandria, Virginia); (iii) Justice High School (Fairfax County, Virginia) and (iv) Meridian High School (Falls Church City, Virginia).

A scholarship of up to $5,000 towards tuition and academic expenses will be awarded. The scholarship is renewable if the recipient maintains a GPA of at least 2.5, is making substantial progress towards an undergraduate degree, and funds are available. 1. Applicant must be a high school senior graduating from Arlington Public Schools, Alexandria City Public Schools, or Fairfax County Public Schools in Spring 2024 with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 (at end of junior year) and applying for college admission/enrollment in Fall 2024 at any four-year, accredited college/university OR any two-year community college (excluding any for-profit schools).
2. Applicant must be a first-generation college student. For purposes of the AFF scholarship, a first-generation student will be defined as a student whose parents have not earned an undergraduate degree in the United States.
3. Applicant must be FAFSA Eligible.
4. Student must have an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) of no more than $15,000.
5. When choosing scholarship winners, factors to be considered include financial need, academic achievement, scholarship application answers, letters of recommendation, school/community engagement, and candidate interview.
6. Applicant must submit a completed Akerson Family Foundation Scholarship application by the deadline of MARCH 1, 2024 deadline.
7. Finalists must participate in an interview with AFF staff and/or board members.
